Whose war is the Eelam war?

At the beginning of the Maha Bharatham war, Arjuna asks Krishna a question.
Krishna, do I have to kill all these people who are my relatives and friends for getting the kingdom for the Pandavas? The Githa takes birth from the mouth of Krishna as the answers to Arjuna’s questions.
During the preaching, at one stage, Krishna puts a question back to Arjuna. Krishna asks, Arjuna, do you think that all these Kings, Generals, and the soldiers on the both sides are here to fight for or against you? Krishna goes on to answer the question as follows. Everybody who is taking part in this war is here to fight his own enemies. They are not here to fight for you or against you. For example, Dhristathuiman is here to revenge Dhrona. Sikhandi is here to kill Bishma and so are many others here to wage their own war using this opportunity. Krishna goes on and on and finishes the Githopathesam.

Let’s stop here and see the immortal statement in the Githa. There is a war which is between two parties which fought over one goal but the supporting participants joining hands of the warring parties are waging their own wars making use of the opportunity. They are not worried too much about who gets killed and what gets destroyed. This is and has been exactly the case in the Eelam war. Let’s take a closer look.

The warring parties in Eelam war are the Tamils and the Sinhalese. Let’s see how the other players in the war are fighting their own wars making use of the Eelam war.

The war started attracting the other players with the 1983 brutal attack on the Tamils by the Sinhala government sponsored thugs. Frustrated Tamil youth, in large numbers, flocked to join the then small armed movement. Sensing an opportunity, India is quickly getting into the picture by providing all the necessities to the youth to be trained in warfare. Why is India stepping in? Maybe, She was sympathetic towards the affected Tamils. But the other agenda is to punish Sri Lanka for helping China and Pakistan during the India-Pakistan and India-China wars in the earlier years. India becomes successful in growing up the Tamil armed movements. Are there movements? Yes, India is making sure to have more than one group of armed movements so that they can be kept checked when necessary. Simply putting, Divide and Rule.

The fight is going on and the Tamil youth movements start loosing grounds in the latter part of 1980s. So, India decides to step in with a peace agenda and lands in the North and East of Sri Lanka in the name of Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF). The Sinhala ruler JR is worried for being taken for a ride by the Indians and for letting they land their troops in Sri Lanka. He is planning something big to check the Indians back. Some anti Tamil elements in the Indian government and JR somehow succeed in getting the Tigers fighting the IPKF. JR is laughing for making Indians fight the Tigers of his war. India being on the Sinhala side, gives a message to the Tigers that they are no friend for anybody. Again using the Eelam war, JR fights India as well as the Tigers with this trap.

After some times, JR is gone, Premadasa is taking charge of Sri Lanka helm. He has always disliked Indian superior status and uses the Eelam war to get the Indians defeated and get them out of Sri Lanka. He helps the Tigers fight the Indians and finally get the IPKF out of Sri Lanka.

In the mean time, a big treason is hatching to remove Rajiv Ghandi from the world for many unknown reasons only known to those who have planned it. Making use of some trained Tamil carders in the plot, the killers finishes the life of Rajiv Ghandi and vanishes from the scene putting the blame on the Tigers. India also exploiting the blame on Tigers waits for an opportunity to revenge the Tigers for the lost war during the IPKF time. There are so many unanswered questions and unturned stones in Rajiv’s killing but nobody seems interested for some reasons.

Then for some time the war between the real parties is going on and off. In this period, lots of Sinhala political killings happen in the name Eelam war.

At a later part of 1990s, the war victory swings in the direction of the Tigers and the International Community gets involved in this war with a peace agreement. Now the war is used for economical and political purposes of the international community with a non-functioning peace process. US, UK and Japan lining behind Norway with the so called title of co-chairs, stage the peace plan. The big countries had some reasons to sideline India from this stage and to send a message to India. Once bitten India also keeps low and goes into hibernation mode. The peace plan is going nowhere for too long. So, the fight starts again. India is seen behind the scene for the war developments. Now, the IC could not do anything to stop India getting into the picture secretly once again because of the widely used propaganda - the “war on terror”.

The war starts with Mahinda at the helm and India provides help to Sri Lanka to revenge the Tigers. An interesting note here is that some Indians are finding the lost link with the Sinhalese. The Arian relationship theory is playing a role between North Indians and the Sinhalese. In addition to this, the present population of 17 million Sinhalese are not the descendants of only Vijaya and his 700 friends from Orissa who came to Sri Lanka 2000 years ago. There have been lots and lots of Malayalees coming to Sri Lanka in the past and settled down most of the costal areas of the south. Abandoning their Malayalee identity, they turn themselves into Sinhalese identity. Many in the Sri Lankan government are believed to be of Malayalee descendant. This truth is now unveiled to some Malayalee high ranking officials in the Indian government. Malayalees are revenging their old wounds with Tamil Nadu Tamils through this war by helping the Sinhalese to fight the Tamils in Sri Lanka. So Malayalees and other Indians are newly finding their lost link and are helping the Sinhalese in some ways. Now, India, cleverly turning the plate, fights the Tigers using Sri Lankan forces. The war is still going on with un-imaginable horror to the Tamil civilians.

What is India trying to gain? Maybe a base for its forces in Sri Lanka that keeps all the Sri Lankans under its surveillance. Keep Sri Lanka in a situation of chaos for all the time. What else could be there? The revenge.

Who else is waiting to take part in this war to fight their own wars is unknown.
How long is the war going to go on? Only the time can answer. Or Krishna?

So, whose war actually is the Eelam war?
Whoever they are, the suffering is for the poor Tamils of Sri Lanka.
